Whenever an officer pulls someone over in a car, as soon as first contact is made with the suspect, the officer requests the driver surrender the car keys until the officer has completed his investigation. This way if the suspect gets squirrelly, schitzed out or anything and decides to flee then that option for the suspect is effectively removed. There are even more reasons this is important. If the officer has the keys and say the suspect turns violent, his escape is blocked. The officer should ask the driver for all ignition keys for this vehicle, and if the suspect holds back on a second key, then you have a charge already just for Impeding an Investigation or lying to an officer. I just feel that this simple effort will make the job safer for officers and for the public threatened by a crazy driver taking police on a chase. Steve Shep, January 17, 2006 11:32 am |
